How To Properly Choose A Mat Color

Matting a piece of artwork serves three fundamental purposes:

1. It's practical to keep some distance between a work of art and the glass that protects it. Direct contact can be problematic because humidity can cause the art medium and the glass to adhere to one another, damaging the piece of art.

2. It helps make a work of art more decorative. Adding a mat to any piece, including a photograph, helps bring together other elements in a room where the art is displayed. Ideally, a carefully chosen color of matting will bring the piece of art into a harmonious relationship with both the mat and the color of the wall on which it's displayed.

3. It's creative and allow you to utilize your creativity to enhance the subject and colors in your matted piece. A work of art can't be altered once it's been created, but it can be enhanced and complimented by the right choice of mat board.

The rule when working with mat boards and pieces of art is that there are no clear-cut rules that dictate how you should proceed. There are however, guidelines that can help you make a choice that is in harmony with your preference for decor and your taste in color and art. Although the guidelines can help you make a good choice of pre cut mat for your print, understanding them can also help you develop your own taste that essentially fails to follow the rules.

The Basics

The primary rule of choosing a picture mat is to choose mat board that does not match the color of your frame. Choosing a similarly colored mat impairs the enhancement and causes the mat to blend in with the frame. This defeats the purpose of the mat and the frame.
Next, because your goal is to create a visual transition that runs from the print's brightness to the wall's brightness, you should always choose a mat board that has a medium brightness. Essentially, this means that your picture mat needs to be lighter than your print but also darker than the wall used to display the print.
Finally, use mat boards that are the same color on all prints displayed as a group. The mat board will then tie all of your prints together visually. Alternately, you can alternate mat board colors to create artistic effects when using multiple pieces of art.

The Importance of Core Color

Each mat board has a core color that is not revealed until the hole for the pieces of art is removed. This color is important for highlighting the piece of art, because it lies immediately adjacent to the print itself.
In most cases, the mat board core color is the same as the mat board or it may be white. Working with mat board that has a core that is the same color makes matting a print easy however using a mat board that has a white core color can help to add another frame to the print. Additionally, a white core can create unwanted and unnecessary distracting, especially if the print and frame are more subdued.
White and Black Matters

There's a reason why white and off-white mats are routinely used to frame prints. These neutrals simply work against other colors. Mat boards are the ideal neutral area that lies between the print and your frame and using a neutral mat board allows the colors of the print and the frame to stand out.
One of the most popular mat boards used by photographers is a white board that has an inner black core. Between the frame and print, the white mat board acts as a neutral area that brings the eye to the print. In addition, the black core finely outlines the print, offsetting it from the mat without pulling the eye away from the print. Mat boards that are either black or grey can also be used as a neutral but they tend to have a much harsher effect.

How To Cut A Matboard With A Cutter

One of the most visually appealing ways to display your photography is to mount your work on mat board. This provides a rigid surface that stays flat against a wall while leaving edges empty for a clean line without a frame that distract from the picture.

1. Place the mat board on a level, firm, surface that is covered by a cutting mat.
2. Match a corner of the board with a corner of the cutting mat, at the edge marked zero inches or centimeters.
3. Attach the mat board cutter to the corner that contains the board and the cutting mat. Secure the cutter to the edge by tightening the screw counterclockwise one turn.
4. Move the blade of the cutter to the down position and tighten the adjustment screw by one turn clockwise.
5. Place a straightedge over the mat board, with the edge against the edge to be cut.
6. Gently hold down the mat board while you run the cutter along the edge.
7. Loosen the mat board from the screws and remove.

When you're matting and framing one of your photographs, a print or other flat piece of art, the value of the item should be taken into consideration. In addition, you should consider whether the finished piece will be used for decoration or if you might also want to preserve it because it has historic or intrinsic value.

Fortunately, if you're framing something for use as a part of your home decor, you have a variety of choices for matting. Mats come in a wide selection of colors and materials, and can feature textures created by suede, velvet or fabric. Choosing an outer mat that is complimented by a mat that features a different color or texture, or making selective decorative cuts on the outer edge of the matting can provide you with a piece of art with a completely unique style.

Although these approaches may make your selected art look great, they may also compromise your ability to preserve the piece and can lead to damage over time. This is why you need to understand and consider the value of the piece to be matted and framed before choosing the materials and style of your display. Matting should be chosen based on it's ability to preserve and protect when using it to frame a valuable piece of art. Material used to make the matboard should be acid-free, lignin-free and has an inherently neutral balance of acidity and alkalinity. Keep in mind that a mat that has a neutral pH should not simply be buffered to make it neutral.

Acid mat burn is characterized by yellow or brown staining that begin to develop on the edges of the piece, where the mat lays on the art. If this is combined with a backing on the piece that is acidic, the stains can migrate throughout the piece of art. The damage caused by mat burn isn't limited to discoloration either, because it also makes the art's paper brittle and prone to additional damage, easy ripping and general decomposition.

How To Repair Picture Matting

A mat is used to complement a picture or piece of framed art. After time, the picture matting can start to show normal wear and tear, such as discoloring, crinkling and creasing. When choosing a mat, find one that will complement the photograph, but also withstand time. For example, lighter mats will be less likely to show fading. However, should the picture matting become damaged, there are ways to update and make it look fresh and presentable.

Take the photograph and matting out of the frame. Look at both sides for anything that needs to be repaired or replaced. If the mat board is wrinkled, place a paper towel over it and on a low heat setting, run an iron over it.

The picture mats may have to be replaced if it is overly faded or torn. If you have to replace the entire mat, choose one that is acid free. This will help preserve your photograph by not causing additional deterioration when framed. Use the previous mat as a guide when cutting the new mat out. Trace along the inside of the mat opening onto a piece of cardboard. Then place the cardboard on the new board and cut out using an X-Acto knife.

Place new matting and photograph in the frame and hang in desired location on your wall. To prevent the new, or repaired matting from needing to be repaired in the future, keep in a place where it will have little sunlight. This will prevent fading of the mat and photograph. Also, keep the frame hung in a low traffic area, which will reduce the risk of it being knocked off the wall.

Cropping Artwork With Mats

If you have a picture or a piece of artwork that lacks interest or flair, consider cropping it with a photo mat during the framing process. Sometimes there are spectacular elements in your photo, but other parts are distracting. It is perfectly acceptable to cover a portion of the picture with photo mat board to accentuate the positive aspects.

How To Attach A Picture To A Mat

Matting a photo is a great skill that can go a long way toward decorating your home or enjoying scrapbooking activities. However, it is important to pay attention to your project to keep your finished project looking professional. Although you can have mat boards attached to your photos professionally, you can save money by doing this yourself.

The first thing to do is measure the picture with a ruler. Do this even if your photo developer has indicated that it is a certain size because photos can often vary slightly. Write the size on the back of the photo with a pencil for reference.

Next, choose two different backgrounds for your photo. You can choose two solid colors, two complimentary patterns, or a pattern and a solid. Take care that your mat board background is not too overwhelming as to outshine your photo. Patterns are often used for black and white photos, while solids work well with photos in color.

Using a ruler and a paper trimmer, measure and cut your base mat to be a half inch larger on all sides than your photo. Do the same with your inside mat, making this a quarter inch larger on each side than your photo, so that both mats and your picture are all in graduating sizes.

Turn your picture upside down and apply non-acidic adhesive. Mounting squares are a good choice. Turn the picture over and center it onto the smaller of your pre cut mats. Once your adhesive is secure, turn the picture with the first mat upside down again. Apply your adhesive to the back of the mat board in the same way you did with your photo. Turn this over and center on your base mat board. Now it is ready to hang on the wall or add to your scrapbook.

If you have many different sizes of photos to hang on a large wall, consider a variety of frame styles mounted randomly over the entire wall.

You can create a unique frame to showcase your favorite artwork using two frames and an acid free mat board. This technique is called frame stacking and is suitable for large and oversize pieces. Frame stacking helps create a more glamorous presentation. The outer frame typically has more intricate, florid details. The simpler inner frame should fit inside the rabbet of the larger frame perfectly. Secure the two frames together using a staple gun.
Select an acid free mat boards or linen insert to compliment your picture. Mount artwork using several small pieces of acid free artist tape across the top of the art. Taping only the top allows expansion and contraction during temperature changes. When you are framing a collector's item or a piece that cannot be replaced, use tape cautiously. Some tape causes damage and it is better to skip the tape than to damage an irreplaceable art piece.

How to Cut Photo Mats for Pictures

Learning how to cut precut picture mats comes in handy whenever you need one for a framed photograph. Mat boards add a complementary effect to most framed photographs and other artwork, drawing the viewer’s eye towards the actual piece. You can purchase precut mat board, but if you’re attempting to use a frame of a nonstandard size, you won’t have much choice but to pay for custom cut photo mats, or cut your own from full size sheets of mat board.

There are various options for cutting matboard, such as; use a straight-edge, and sharp blade, manual tabletop matboard cutters, and even industrial automated mat cutting machines. This decision should be made by determing your volume and frequency of mat cutting projects.

Before you can begin cutting the matboard, you’ll need to measure the outside dimensions so the actual board fits inside of the picture frame. Make the measurements with a ruler and mark the dimensions on the back of the mat with a pencil. Afterwards, place the mat cutter on the mat board and make your cut to the measured marks. A second or third pass may be necessary for a clean cut.

Now you can focus on the inside dimensions of the mat board. Measure the height and width of the photo you plan to frame. Once you have those measurements, subtract 1/4-inch from the size of the opening. For example, with a 4-inch by 6-inch photo, the inside of the board should be 3 3/4-inches by 5 3/4-inches. Determine the width of the border by subtracting the inside dimensions from the outside dimensions, and then divide the result by two to get the border width. This will provide just enough overlap, to properly hide the photo edges.

Once again, place the mat cutter over one of the marks. Using the ruler as a guide, carefully make a cut from one mark to the next. Lift the blade at each corner and set it back down at the next cut. Again, you may need to make multiple passes in order to get a clean cut.

The Eternal Question: Foamcore or Corrugated?

There are two main types of backing board available as framing supplies: foamcore and corrugated. The type of board that is best for mounting a picture will depend on the individual project. Selecting the type of matboard for your project should not be arbitrary; you should select either foamcore or corrugated backing board based on their characteristics.

High-End Backing Board

Foamcore is more expensive than corrugated backing because it offers a higher standard of quality. Foamcore is buffered to slow down deterioration and preserve and protect artwork long-term. Its finished appearance also repels dust, making it easy to keep clean. If you have a pricey piece of art you want to enjoy for a long time, it can be worth spending more on framing -- investing in foamcore backing to mat your piece. Foamcore is an appropriate choice for items you want to protect, including original artwork, limited edition prints, collector's items and treasured family photos.

Color Differences

Foam board offers a white surface for backing, which is useful for framing art that has a bit of translucence. The white mat board creates an attractive backdrop for works on rice paper and other translucent materials. On the other hand, the brown color of corrugated backing can cause art with some translucency to appear darker, creating an unattractive appearance for the artwork.

Short-Term Display

Although foamcore backing has several advantages for framing precious artwork, corrugated backing is useful as backing for items that are to be displayed temporarily, or short-term. A professional license that is updated regularly or an annual family photo that requires re-framing often can benefit from impermanent corrugated backing.

Perhaps the most important part of frame design is matboard width. Unfortunately mat boards is also one of the most misunderstood elements of framing. The image size that you are framing and the size of the focal point in the image are the determinants in selecting the best width for your matboard.

The wider the mat the more attention-getting the art work appears.
This happens as wide mats create a striking appearance and focuses attention on the art work. Thus, an art gallery type of display is created in a simple,yet professional way. Small pieces of art benefit from wide mats as the mat lends an aura of importance and worth. Larger pieces also benefit from wide mats as the wide mats keeps an appropriate balance with picture frame sizes and also keeps the work and frame in proportion. Framing experts recommend that the mat be twice the size of your frame's width. (So, if your frame is three inches wide, a six-inch mat will look amazing.

If you choose to double mat, the “twice as wide” rule only is used for the top mat.
You will want to steer away from striping. This is an unsightly issue that occurs when double mats are the same width, (or, making matters worse, the same width as the frame!). Put another way, use a mat that is proportional on the top and sides but wider on the bottom to achieve a professional look. Another weighing technique is used when hanging two pieces side by side that are the same size next to one another on the wall. Keeping art safe can be challenging. There are many elements that cause damage to framed pictures and artwork, and it's important to be aware of what can harm artwork and take precautions to keep it safe and retain its value.

Temperature:
Framed artwork should be stored at a temperature between 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit, and rapid shifts in temperature should be avoided. Excess heat may cause deterioration and cold can cause brittleness.

Excess moisture and humidity can also damage artwork. Paper can warp or mold when moisture levels are too high. Humidity should be controlled to less than 60%. Running an air conditioner or dehumidifier can help keep this under control.

Light:
Light is also one of the elements that cause damage to framed pictures & artwork. Fading and color changes can result from too much light exposure, with direct sunlight causing the most damage to artwork. When art is on display, it should be under the lowest practical light levels, and direct contact with spotlights and picture lights should never be aimed directly at the art.

Insects:
Another danger to artwork is insects. Each insect has their favorite element to attack. Silverfish look for starch and wood paper pulp, book-lice like anything damp, and cockroaches like the sweetness in many adhesives and paints.

Of course, none of this is good. With all the possible dangers, it is best to keep artwork in a cool, dry, sealed container where it is not exposed to light. Avoiding elements that cause damage to framed pictures and artwork will help assure that it can be appreciated when the time is right.

Joni James I have been selling my art prints for over two years now. Bare and empty walls create the wrong ambience if you are in the picture framing business and/or a photographer who sells his artwork. Think outside of the box and find some fun and exciting ways to creatively display your work.

Simply hanging one picture frame on the wall, is not very stimulating and usually very boring. Use more than one photo frame to arrange a creative wall display. Remember that scattering frames will give you an unbalanced look, however, grouping frames will better captivate the eye with a natural interest or curiosity of the pattern and design. Read on to see how these “grouping” techniques will work for you.

Keep it balanced:

Use a Symmetrical arrangement to achieve a mirrored fashion look which will create an equal pairing of space between your photographs. Symmetrical arrangements are common where the room is formal.

Organic & Free:

Try Asymmetrical arrangement for a more casual or contemporary appearance. Compared to the orderly balanced look of Symmetrical, Asymmetrical displays can be a mix of large pieces with smaller ones and then cluster the objects randomly off-center. TIP: A great way to see how it will look when you have the arrangement all together is to cut out pieces of white cardboard and tape them to the wall in different arrangement before you hang the pictures.

Grid-like is a display of several different pictures all in a row with even space around each of them. Using the same colored matt board makes the arrangement look clean and equally proportioned.

TIP: Leave approximately 3 ½ inches surrounding each of the picture frames.

No holes – Lean it

Add more interest to your space, by not hanging your frames from the wall. Experiment with Freedom arrangement, set your photo frames on shelves and let it lean against the wall. Picture Frame Matting Choices

Finding the right matboard to enhance the value of your print can be challenging to most. It takes time and an artistic eye to choose the color, size, and shape of the mat that will best compliment your print.

Options to keep in mind when customizing your picture mats include size, color, border and shape. Below are descriptions for each of the four categories:

Size

Though it depends on personal taste and style, generally the top and sides of the photo mats should be equal in length with the bottom border measuring a bit larger (usually 1/4 - 1/2 inch) to create a base for the matboard, this is also known as a weighted mat.

Border

Matted borders should extend beyond the edge of the photo according to the following guidelines.

5x7 photo border mats: 1 ½ - 2 inches beyond the photo edge.

8x10 photo border mats: 2 - 2 ½ inches beyond the photo edge.

11x14 photo border mats: 2 - 2 ½ inches beyond the photo edge.

The measurements above are a good standard set up, however, print and framing variables can present a need for different border widths.

Color

Color is also a personal style and taste. Typically, you want your photos to pop, so choosing a loud or bright mat color may draw eyes away from the photo rather than enhancing it. Most choose softer, neutral colors to enhance or compliment photos. Mat colors could include grays and charcoals or tans and browns for either color or black and white photographs.

Shape

Shape is yet another way to personalize matting for photos. Some general shapes to consider for picture mats include squares, ovals, or most commonly rectangles. More specific shapes are also available to compliment a photo, this is where BDmatboard can assist in creating Custom Mats. Do keep in mind that, like bright colors, drastic shapes in matting can take away from the photo rather than enhance it. When choosing a matboard shape, it is better to keep it simple.

What is Matboard?
